TV, Movies, Scrivener, oh my!

Once Upon a Time

I love Maleficent. (Also, it was weird seeing Pam dressed up as a wicked witch.) I'm hoping she shows up more later in the series, maybe as a foil to the wicked witch or as the driving power for a spell to undo thr curse.

I continue to love Rumpelstiltskin. Such a cryptic bastard. I can tell he's got an agenda all of his own and I'm waiting to see how that plays out.

Still hate Snow White's hair cut. That seems to be a common reaction among people who've seen the show.

In Time

Overall, a pretty decent movie but I can't quite wrap my head around the core concept of it - that time is a commodity that starts once you're 25. So there was a bit in the beginning that this is some sort of futuristic society where money fell out of use and time became the new commodity, but if so why is most of the tech still basic. Also, how did it get started in the first place? People aren't born with ticking clocks on their arm (or maybe they are in this universe, it was never explained) so is there a government agency that goes around installing it? I mean they were pretty clear that once upon a time life wasn't like that and that in the past people grew old and died, so how did that get started?

Obviously the system is some kind of advanced tech biometrics but again, where's the rest of the updated tech? The only parts that are advanced are things dealing with time. Everything else is still 20th century. 20th century guns. 20th century buses. TVs looked fairly current. Don't recall seeing a computer in use anywhere, which in retrospect was kind of strange.

I really feel that the point of the movie, instead of the grand string of bank robberies, should have been focused on crashing the whole system. Give people back their natural lives and break the clock entirely.

Also, why hasn't someone figured out a way to hack the system ala the Game Genie or the like? Infinite lives at the push of a button.

If you take the movie at face value and don't question anything, it's a decent and entertaining action flick, but it really doesn't stand up to even a modicum of scrutiny on how the basic premise even works.

Foxy Shazam, Patrick Stump, and Panic at the Disco

The opener, Foxy Shazam, was kinda crap. While I have to give them kudos for incorporating a trumpet (any band with brass gets bonus points from me) they really need to work less on over the top stage theatrics and more on actual talent.

Patrick Stump was awesome as expected. I was the only one of the three of us that went who'd heard his stuff before. I love his covers to no end. Definitely got two more converts to the cult of Stump by the end of his set.

Panic was also awesome, but omg do they overuse bright flashy lights shining out into the audience. Finally got proof that stage lighting can induce seizures the same way florescent do for me, though thankfully I had the forethought to close and shield my eyes when the lights started flashing so I only got the precursor effects and not a full blown seizure. Spent a good third to half the concert with my eyes shut but that's better than ending up on the floor. There was a really neat effect with red and blue lights behind the band that made it seem like they were in black-and-white, and I really loved the Steampunk set.

House

I don't know why I keep watching. I dread watching it but like a trainwreck, I just can't look away. It's slowly starting to win me back. This week's episode was pretty decent actually. I'm hoping they continue to get better.

Grimm

I'm really in love with this show and if I didn't have a million things to write this month, I'd be doing fanfic for it like whoa. I'm kind of having fun figuring out what fairy tale each episode is based on. First was the obvious Little Red Riding Hood, and the second episode was Goldilocks and the Three Bears (though I didn't pick up on that until the next day because I was apparently being completely slow while watching it). I can't wait to see what else they'll do. Obviously Rumpelstiltskin is going to come up soon but I'm wondering if they're going to branch into the more obscure stuff too like the Twelve Dancing Princesses or The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids (which was always one of my favorites though I have no idea how they're going to do that since it's about goats and all).

New Computer, Windows 7, and Scrivener

My wonderful boyfriend was wonderful and picked me up a new laptop from one of the Woot deals last week while he was buying one for himself. $379 for a 2.2 GHz quad-core, 17" screen, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive. It's such a fresh change compared to my old one, which I bought back in 2007ish. It was getting to the point where my computer was freezing just from web browsing and I couldn't play Minecraft anymore. The one major downside to the new computer is that it doesn't fit in any of my laptop bags (all 6 of them collected since high school) so hopefully the parents will pick me up one for Christmas after I left a not-so-subtle hint.

I'm liking Windows 7. This is my first time actually using it. I really like the ability to pin things to the start menu (which replaces the quicklaunch) or to the taskbar (which replaced RocketDock - a program that mimics the popup dock from a Mac on Windows). I've heard a lot of good things about 7. It's essentially considered the new XP in terms of stability. In theory we're eventually upgrading from XP to 7 at work, though I don't know why they bother since 90% of most developers' days are spent SSHing into Unix terminals. (VIM all the way!)

I started using the Scrivener trial and it is amazeballs. I need to get my ass in gear and win NaNo just so I can get the 50% off coupon. (You get 20% off just for participating.) I imported my epic XMFC kink meme story into it and have been drooling over how awesome it is at organizing everything. There are character profiles (which is useful as it's an AU where I actually need to keep track of what new things I introduce for each character and the cast itself is massive massive massive) and setting profiles and research notes and outlines and notecards. I'm loving it. After one day I'm already questioning how I ever lived without it.

Hawaii Five-O

So this weeks episode opened with Danny watching an old alien flick that I feel I should know but can't recall ever watching, and the male alien gives birth and Danny tears up. Yeah. That happened. Steve commented on it. I foresee so much Danny-mpreg plot bunnies spawning from that moment in fangirls across the world.

Then the joke between the two Heroes actors... "Do I know you?" I lol'd.

Bones

I love the southern boy intern. That is all.
