Hellboy movies (2004-2008)

What is it:

Two movies directed by Guillermo del Toro. Hellboy (2004) features Ron Pearlman as Hellboy and Rupert Evans as John Myers, the new to everything boy scout FBI agent that's assigned as Hellboy's handler. Hellboy: The Golden Army (2008) continues the series with a war brewing from elven prince Nuada (played by Luke Goss) while his twin sister Nuala works with the BRPD to stop him. John is only a throwaway mention in the second movie as Hellboy had him shipped to Antarctica because he was too friendly with Hellboy's girlfriend Liz.

Where to Watch it:

Hellboy (2004) - Free on Tubi or Amazon Prime and Paramount+ with subscription.
Hellboy: The Golden Army (2008) - With subscription to Amazon Prime, Starz, Hulu, or Roku.

What I like about it:

I really loved John from the first movie. He's the wholesome Boy Scout with a heart of gold who brings a bit of hope to the horrors of the world. Despite them never meeting in cannon, there's a unique dynamic between John and Prince Nuada (2nd movie) that I love seeing explored. Their personalities are polar opposites and I love seeing how John lightens Nuada. (They're very grumpy/sunshine.)

I also love John shipped with Hellboy if that's your thing (with or without Liz). You don't have to be comics-compliant with Hellboy's character. This is the movie-verse after all, though I have read most of the comics. (And watched the cartoons.) In this aspect, John's the balancing force for Hellboy that keeps him reigned in and pulls him back from the darkness that people try to bring out of Hellboy.

Favorite Pairings: Gen focused on John, Nuada/John Myers, or Hellboy/John

Optional Prompts:
- What if John was around for the second movie?
- What if the supernatural world stayed in power instead of letting humanity rule?
- What if John and Nuada were BRPD coworkers or John was hired to be Nuada's handler?
- “Where did all those bruises come from?”

Favorite tropes: enemies to lovers, soulmate aus, A/B/O, kidnapping/bodyguard scenarios, magical AUs, arranged marriage AU, fish out of water, hurt/comfort, power dynamics, soulmates/soulbond

What Is It:

Just thinking of this fandom makes me feel old. (Back in my day....) This series started running in 1995 (which is around when I started watching it) and kept running until 2009 with various movies, OVA, and sequels. The story follows wandering genius sorceress Lina Inverse and her band of merry travellers, which includes the grumpy golem Zelgadis. Xellos is a demon that follows them in a later series. Is he here to help or hinder? It's a secret!

The Slayers universe includes:
Manga (English releases): Slayers: Medieval Mayhem, Special, Super-Explosive Demon Story, and Premium
Light Novels: Slayers Special, Delicious, Select, Anthology, and Spirit
Anime: Slayers, Next (this is where Xellos comes in), Try, and Revolution/Evolution-R
OVA: Slayers Special and Excellent
Movies: Slayers The Motion Picture, Return, Great, Gorgous, and Premium
Radio dramas
TTRPG
Card Game
Video games

Where to Watch It:
Unfortunately, since it's old it's not on streaming but there's a good wiki that's full of information and you can probably find bits on YouTube.

What I like about it:

This fandom/pairing have stuck with me for a long, long time. Partially it's the nostalgia of being one of the first anime I watched, I also love a good explosion via Dragon Slave. Zelgadis is the epitome of grump on the outside, cinamon roll on the inside, and Xellos is an awesome trickster. Most of their interactions involve Xellos teasing or annoying Zelgadis and I'm here for the pigtail-pulling dynamic.

Favorite Pairings:
 Gen with Zelgadis or Xellos/Zelgadis

Optional Prompts:
- What if Zelgadis finally found a cure (and it's not what he expected)?
- Zelgadis's quest to return human (and how that may or may not work out for him)
- Enemies to friends (to lovers?)
- More zany hijinks with Lina and Gourry

Favorite tropes: enemies-to-lovers, hurt/comfort, found family, stranded together, only one bed

Guardians of Camelot - Victoria Sue

What Is It:

A four-book urban fantasy MM romance by Victoria Sue. The first book, The Twelfth Knight, involves Mel (the reincarnation of Merlin) getting caught up in an ages-long battle between the immortal Knights of Camelot and Morgana's evil forces. The Knights are soulbound to their other half (Mel is Lancelot's other half) and the only way to kill one of the Knights is by killing their soulmate.

Where to Read It:
Amazon (Kindle or Print)

What I like about it:

I just read these earlier this year and I need so many stories with these characters. Mel is a delight, the sunshine to Lancelot's grumpy. Charles and Kay's story (book 3, though they're in all the books) is just tragic, but they manage to get together and thrive despite everything thrown at them.

Favorite Pairings: Lancelot/Mel and/or Charles/Kay

Optional Prompts:
- Modern/College AU (no magic)
- Anything set after the series with the characters living happily ever after
- Group laser tag
- Marriage proposals

Favorite tropes: hurt/comfort, sickfic, found family, domestic fluff, courting, soulmates

MADK

What Is It:
MADK is a 3 volume yaoi manga by Ryo Suzuri. The blurb from Sublime Manga:
Makoto has long been ostracized because of his odd hobbies and a sexual kink others see as disgusting. One day he summons Archduke J—a trickster demon from hell—and sells his soul to him, only to unknowingly end up reborn in hell…as J’s demon underling! As he learns and grows in his new role, his infatuation with J turns into an obsession—an obsession to surpass the very demon who birthed him.

Where to Read It:
Not available for free but available for sale at Barnes & Noble or a number of places online.

What I like about it:

This is one messed up story but I find the dynamic between the characters fascinating. Makoto is a flawed character and the juxtaposition with a literal demon (who's arguably more good). I would love something that explores more of the demon society that Makoto has found himself in.

Favorite Pairings: J/Makoto

Optional Prompts:
- Alternate Universe - bickering flirty assassins
- Alternate Universe - Author/Editor
- AU-A Was Child B's Closet Monster; Now Adult B Doesn't Recognize A Who Is Pretending To Be Human
- demonic courtship

Favorite tropes: hurt/comfort, enemies??-to-lovers, service kink, teasing/edging, aphrodisiacs, sensory deprivation, BDSM, possessiveness, fish-out-of-water/strange new world

Please keep it light on the vore/cannibalism.

バケモノとケダモノ | Bakemono to Kedamono | Monster and the Beast (Manga)

What Is It:
A 4 volume yaoi manga. Here's the blurb from Yen Press:
Solitary Cavo is a hideous monster with a pure heart. Liam, on the other hand, might look like a gentleman, but he's a beast on the inside, warped personality and all. When Liam ends up in an unfortunate situation in the haunted woods Cavo calls home, it's the monster to the rescue! After the close call, Liam extends a more-than-friendly hand to Cavo and leads the innocent monster out of the woods...and astray?!

Where to Read It:
Available for purchase from Barnes & Noble or many online retailers

What I like about it:

I read this series not that long ago. It's beautiful. I wish there was more to the story, so if this one interests you there's plenty of timeskips to work with. Maybe an in-between scene or something set after?

Favorite Pairings: Kavo/Liam

Optional Prompts:
- Modern AU
- You're the monster in the woods that everyone's afraid of and I was left as a sacrifice/tribute, but you're actually really nice.
- Courtship rituals
- temporarily feral!Kavo just wants to cuddle

Favorite tropes: soulmates, weird together/found family, protectiveness, gentleness, size differences, road trips

Bedknobs and Broomsticks - Josh Lanyon

What Is It:
Three book (eventually 6 books) series of M/M mystery romance by Josh Lanyon. I'm current on this series and the side stories, so feel free to set the story at any point in the timeline.

From Josh's site:
Cosmo Saville guiltily hides a paranormal secret from his soon-to-be husband. Thanks to a powerful love spell, uncertainty threatens his nuptial magic. But when he’s arrested for allegedly killing a longtime rival, he could spend his honeymoon behind bars…

Police Commissioner John Joseph Galbraith never believed in Happily Ever After until Cosmo came along. Falling head over heels for the elegant antiques dealer is an enchantment he never wants to break. But when all fingers point to Cosmo’s guilt, John struggles to trust what his heart is telling him.

As Cosmo hunts for the real killer among the arcane aristocracy, John warns him to leave it to the police. But with an unseen enemy threatening to expose Cosmo’s true nature, the couple’s blissful future could shatter like a broken charm.

Where to Read It:
Amazon (Kindle, print, audiobook)

What I like about it:

John and Cosmo start off with a bit of a rocky relationship but it's obvious that they truly, deeply love each other. Cosmo's turned his back on magical society (mostly...) to be with John. John didn't realize he married a witch but he adores Cosmo, no love spells needed. This series is a straight kick in the feels sometimes but so good.

Favorite Pairings: John/Cosmo

Optional Prompts:
- Teaching Cosmo to swim
- Cosmo is the strange, cute mascot of John's precinct
- Cosmo loses his memory, including all his magical knowledge

Favorite tropes: domesticity, hurt/comfort, sickfic, protectiveness, sex magic, manhandling

Secrets and Scrabble - Josh Lanyon

What Is It:
An 8 book (so far) M/M cozy mystery series about a bookstore owner who loves Scrabble and the police chief who loves him. I'm current on this series and the side stories, so feel free to set the story at any point in the timeline.

The blurb from book 1:
Ellery Page, aspiring screenwriter, Scrabble champion and guy-with-worst-luck-in-the-world-when-it-comes-to-dating, is ready to make a change. So when he learns he's inherited both a failing bookstore and a falling-down mansion in the quaint seaside village of Pirate's Cove on Buck Island, Rhode Island, it's full steam ahead!

Sure enough, the village is charming, its residents amusingly eccentric, and widowed police chief Jack Carson is decidedly yummy (though probably as straight as he is stern). However, the bookstore is failing, the mansion is falling down, and there's that little drawback of finding rival bookseller--and head of the unwelcoming-committee--Trevor Maples dead during the annual Buccaneer Days celebration.

Still, it could be worse. And once Police Chief Carson learns Trevor was killed with the cutlass hanging over the door of Ellery's bookstore, it is.

Where to Read It:
Amazon (Kindle, paperback, or audiobook)

What I like about it:

This series is a sweet, wholesome take on Josh's usual murder mysteries. There's a large cast of side characters with their own quirks, but Watson shines as the best co-star. Jack and Ellery make such a good couple. Even the setting (Ellery's quirky house and the bookshop) have the presence of a character. This series is a nice low-angst read.

Favorite Pairings: Jack/Ellery

Optional Prompts:
- any kind of domestic fluff (bonus points for including Watson cuddles)
- Jack taking care of Ellery after he's injured or vice versa
- cuddling for warmth when the power goes out

Favorite tropes: domestic fluff, sickfic, hurt/comfort, injury recovery, courtship/marriage, slice of life

Harvestella

What Is It:
JRPG meets farm sim with an amazing plot. The amnesiac protagonist (Ein) joins forces with other skilled individuals to stop a calamity that's about to befall the world. There's magic and science mixed together with a wonderful twist on who Ein really is and what's going on behind the curtain.

Where to Play It:
Steam, Playstation, Nintendo Switch

What I like about it:

This game combines two of my favorite genres SquareEnix JRPGs + farming sims. The combat system is fun (you learn the fighting styles of your party members) and all the characters are interesting. It starts out like a simple farming sim in a magical world, then you meet the androids and go into the castle and next thing you know, you're in space and everything you thought you knew is a lie. Or something like that. ;)

Favorite Pairings: Brakka/Male!Ein
I prefer M/M pairings if there's any romance. While not nominated, I also like Heine, Asyl, Istina, and Emo as side characters.

Optional Prompts:
- Is this a date or a mercenary mission? Brakka is so stoic, it's hard to tell.
- Team bonding - viewing the cherry blossoms in spring, beach trip in summer, sipping cider and pumpkin-flavored things in fall, ice skating in winter.
- Ein comes up with flimsy excuses to hire Brakka

Favorite tropes: Found family, grumpy/sunshine, mission fic, sickfic, hurt/comfort, kidnapping/bodyguard scenarios

There's a group of people doing Interactive Fiction (text-based games and choose your own adventure) for Yuletide. I wanna do one so go post here or comment below with prompts and I'll pick one to do. (Because I'm insane and moving/three challenges due in december isn't enough for me).
gryvon: (Default)
Author reveals are up for Yuletide. I wrote two fics, the first of which ended up in the top 20 most read fics of Yuletide, which was awesome. ^_^

Belonging - (Suits, Harvey/Mike, NC-17, Includes BDSM and Sounding) When Harvey catches Mike at a BDSM club, he expects to be fired. He doesn't expect Harvey to pull out his checkbook and buy him.

Bad Ideas and Better Company - (Junjou Romantica, Gen) He knew buying the book was a bad idea. He didn't need it, really, but it called to him. He wasn't the only one it called to.

Also, finally got a chance to repost the HP fic I wrote earlier in the year:

In Shadows Found - (Harry Potter, Severus/Draco/Harry, NC-17) Harry goes missing during an investigation. Draco and Severus team up to search for him.
gryvon: (Default)
So, Yuletide was awesome this year. I wrote two fics, one of which was a brand new kink for me. I was all "this is the first I've run across this, must not be a very popular kink but seems okay to me" and then I wrote fic and the Yuletide readers have been proving how very wrong I was about that kink. Like whoa.

Author reveals are this weekend. Whee!

So, to start off, I got five fic. FIVE. And they're all awesome. ^___^

Just a Little Slip - (Grimm, PG, Eddie/Nick) It started with I need you and I trust you and protect my aunt and please. And it’s been so long since Eddie’s been wanted that he just couldn’t say no.
I asked for a fic about Eddie going all animalistic and this fit that to a T.

Not My Type - (Hellboy, PG, Nuada/John) When John gets back, a lot of things are different around the BPRD. Most notably all the elves.
More Nuada/John!!! There is so not enough of this pairing!

Tree Dreams - (Hellboy, PG, Nuada/John) John Myers: Tree Hugger.
Even more Nuada/John, with a slight humor bent and a setup full of awesome and win.

Stop and Smell the Grimm - (Grimm, R, Eddie/Nick) Sometimes Nick forgets exactly how good Monroe's sense of smell is.
THIS!! OMG THIS!!! *flails*

Little Details - (Hanna is Not a Boy's Name, G, Gen) It's not that he minds - but Hanna doesn't share much, so when he does, it feels extraordinarily important.
Fic! For HiNaBN!! Happy, happy case fic!

And other fic I enjoyed, sorted by fandom, with a mix of genres and pairings or lack thereof:

Elenium/Tamuli, male!Aphrael/Talen, genderswitch, NC-17 - Experience
OK, he might have liked to have experimented with men or, indeed, anyone, before he’d married, and still thought it was incredibly unfair that through his hormone-charged teenage years he’d been unknowingly under the thumb of his practically omnipotent future wife and over-protective future father-in-law, but he was married now, and had no interest in dallying with anyone except his wife.

gryvon: (Default)
Yuletide authors have been revealed, and thus I can finally link to what I wrote. Also adding in the story I wrote for kakairu_fest (which had the author reveal on the 28th) that I keep forgetting to post.

My actual Yuletide assignment was for Sex Therapist, which is a wonderfully smutty single-volume work by Kazuma Kodaka. I read it a good dozen times as prep for the fic, though I'd originally intended to add more overt occultness to it, then ended up just leaving it to vague mentions. Have I mentioned how much I love writing for obscure manga fandoms?

Coming to Rest (Sex Therapist by Kazuma Kodaka, Tsuzuki/Kain) - The former priest Kain takes on the appearance of the men his clients secretly love, leaving him to wonder if there's anyone who will see Kain for who he really is.

The pinch-hit I grabbed half-way through (early Dec) was for a series I hadn't read before but the universe really intrigued me with it's kink. The two stories that I wrote off of are available online, though I did end up buying the PDF version. (There's a link at the top of the story, it's a whopping $3.) Nearly 7k of pure smut. I don't think I've ever written anything that used that many kink tags. I had to keep looking up what all was in the story. DEFINITELY signing up to write for this again next year.

Electricity (Mate/Whip-Hand by Lauren P. Burka, d'Schane/Terry) - Terry knows that d'Schane is hiding something from him and worries that his lover is slipping away.

And, finally, the last-minute extra fic that I wrote on Christmas Eve, a Rapunzel spin-off. It was supposed to be quick and short. I failed, but at least the story turned out well.

The Boy in the Tower (Fairy Tales/Rapunzel spin-off, original, M/M) - After the prince is thrown from the tower and killed, Rapunzel is left with child. Her son is taken away to live in the tower as Rapunzel's replacement, until a young lord comes to rescue him.

Also, the Kakairu Fest story:

Thorns Have Roses (Naruto, Kakashi/Iruka) - Genma bets Kakashi that he can't get laid in two weeks, but there's only one person that Kakashi's interested in.
gryvon: (Default)
Avengers

Family Traditions (Steve/Tony) - Tony wants to continue a Christmas Eve family tradition with his new husband.

Black Books

The Quiz (Manny/Bernard) - Are Bernard and Manny "Doing It"? Fran takes a magazine quiz to find out.

The Cable Guy (Manny/Bernard) - Aliens made them do it. That or cable TV.

Notes the the Lint Trap (Gen) - Manny attempts to do his laundry. It doesn't go exactly as planned.

A Matter of Perspective (Manny/Bernard) - Bernard, Manny and Fran get drunk. Then they get drunker.

District 9

No Man's Land (Wikus-centric) - Christopher returns early.

Fairy Tales

No Frog, No Princess - "I would have liked being a frog," said the Prince. "There are all sorts of rules and regulations with dealing about how to turn back into a human. I just can't deal with this now."

Hellboy

Wisdom (Nuada/Meyers) - If anyone could change his mind...

White Collar

a form of human interaction (Peter/Neal) - Peter's acting oddly.

It's the Thought That Counts (implied Peter/Neal/Elizabeth) - Specifically: the thought that inviting Neal for Christmas dinner would not result in any trouble and would, in fact, be an act of goodwill and kindness.

Lost and Found (Gen) - Peter and Neal are asked to look into a unusual case at the Frick museum, only to learn that things are not what they seem.

Feint, Counterfeint (Peter/Neal/Elizabeth) - Things are going really well for everyone. Except Peter, for whom things might be going very badly.

And anyone who's ever had a heart (Peter/Neal/Elizabeth) - Before seeing the picture, she'd just slotted Neal Caffrey in as one more thing Peter's brain couldn't let go of, and amusing yourself while your spouse hunted down the greatest international art thief of the age was certainly classier than being a football widow.
gryvon: (Default)
Got another fic today for Yuletide Madness:
NCIS: LA - A Relative to Truth (Gen) - G's relationship with memory is a complicated one.

And onto recs:

Boy Meets World

The Christmas Triangle (Cory/Topanga, Shawn/Cory) - Topanga hugs Shawn and fixes him a spot on the couch, but is she really happy to see him for Christmas?

Cable and Deadpool

Surfing the Fourth Wall (Cable/Deadpool) - Wade does a little Christmas morning reading...

Clover

Fleeting (Gingetsu/Ran) - It's a long night, and Ran welcomes it.

the season of grace coming out from the void (Gingetsu/Ran) - It's the season of bowing our heads in the wind, and knowing we are not alone in fear, not alone in the dark

Dresden Files

Home Front (Thomas/Harry) - "Days that start out fairly normal can still turn into total chaos and disaster by the afternoon. Days that start out hectic, on the other hand, don't have much chances of ending up as quiet evenings by the fireplace - at least in my rather vast experience of hectic days ruled by total chaos and disaster."

Only got a small way through the archive before the bugs in the sorting system and horrible lag made me give up for the evening, but here's the gems I've come across so far today. ^_^

Cable & Deadpool

Cable & Deadpool Yuletide Special - ...summary? Is that like a recap page? Huh. Okay. I'm Deadpool, the Merc with a Mouth. You may remember me from such comics as "Deadpool," "Deadpool," and "Cable & Deadpool," and from my brief appearance in Wolverine's first solo movie, which for now makes me Marvel's latest license to print money -- thank you, Ryan Reynolds. Anyway, now I'm in a Yuletide story, so join me and my buddy Nate Summers, aka Cable, for wacky hijinks and reality-hopping adventure. Say hi to the fangirls, Nate.

Will thinks it maybe should have been more of an epiphany to him, but it was just so obvious. He's well aware that sometimes he just needs to be punched in the face with things for him to truly comprehend them, and that was one of those times.

The Yuletide archive has finally opened. (Site may be slow for a while due to the hammoring of everyone piling in to read.) Three of my stories are hidden in there. Sadly I only had a chance to get one extra story done for Yuletide Madness, mostly due to the fact that I'm apparently incapable of writing anything short. >.- I ended up with four wonderful fics:

White Collar

Pear-Shaped - When Neal suggests a case all does not go according to plan.

Hour of the Wolf - Neal doesn't like hospitals, most especially when he's the one in them. At least Peter's there to drive him home.

I Owe You One - Neal Caffrey's idea of owing somebody can be rather unique.

NCIS: Los Angeles

Permanent Ghosts (Sam/G) - Talking about his foster brother, Jason, in "Keepin' It Real" has caused G to remember more than he wants to.
